It is well understood that the mass media holds the power to reinforce dominant social understandings of males and females, producing discriminating social systems (Ott, 2010,p. 180). These categories of gender stereotyping can be identified through the popular novel known as: Fifty Shades of Grey. Media’s continuous manipulation of incorrectly labeling what’s right versus what’s wrong has held dramatic consequences on the women of today. It’s seen as abnormal when a woman wants to be sexually active and explore her options with her sexual life. Women are expected to fall into certain categories that society had created a thousand years ago, and if change doesnt occur, the world is going to continue to remain in that mindset. It’s not right, to judge someone’s character based on their virginity. When the author of 50 Shades of Grey, decided to do something new, she was heavily judged by everyone. This is due to how media portrayed woman to be, creating a tainted ideology of how they should act and think. Her message of why she wrote the book was obviously different, but it shows how the audience can misinterpret based on what media places as acceptable and unacceptable. Fifty Shades of Grey, is displayed as an erotic book but has gained popularity worldwide. It has been referred to as â€Å"Mommy Porn†, â€Å"The How to Manual†, and â€Å"Twilight for Adults†. There has been a lot of stigma attached to this novel and to the reader who dares to pick up the novel and read it in public. It is especially out of the ordinary for a girl to openly let people know that she’s into the mature subject matter. The book revolves around two main protagonists; Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, fighting the battle of love. Anastasia is portrayed as a young college girl who comes off as very shy. Whereas, Christian is a well-known 27 year old business man, who is widely respected by many in society. The two lock eyes unexpectedly and like most books, end up falling in love with a slight twist. Anastasia, who met Christian by chance, was immediately head over heels for him. However, Christian had a side to him that no one knew about; a dominant side. After realizing that he was interested in Ana on a more sexual level he expresses his feelings to her. Christian states his intentions and introduces her to his fetishes and to a new lifestyle altogether. Ana agrees to his SM lifestyle with consent after losing her virginity to him. Christian being a businessman never mixes business with pleasure, resulting in him keeping non-exclusive relationships that are confidential and which allows him to be the dominant figure without fearing the consequences it entails. In modern day culture this is commonly referred to as â€Å"no strings attached†, â€Å"friends with benefits†, â€Å"a random hookup, and â€Å"non-exclusive†. Basically they would sleep together, but there were no feelings involved, but this only held true for Christian. The novel plays on tension over the nature of their relationship and the possibility of romance and love as well as Anas sexual explorations. The audience’s reactions to this book were surprisingly endless. Many were disgusted, angry, flabbergasted, and even went to the extent of burning the book. Without a doubt, this book pushes several boundaries and had many talking for days. The obvious stereotyping of men vs. women displayed in the book made people believe that the author was taking feminism backwards instead of helping to break the cycle of violence women endured in the past. Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression (cite) but this is exactly what the author is going against. We have come past the first and second wave of Feminism as we have already fought for our right to work, vote and reproductive rights. Many truly believe that we are in post feminism right now, but are we really? The author seemed to be reinforcing the stereotypes that women thought were long gone. A clear patriarchy can be viewed from their relationship as the womens interests are subordinated to those of men. It views women in a way that devalues them. Anastasia has only been with one man sexually. This is seen as a remarkable fact as many women today are not exactly virgins at first meet. We see that Anastasia looks at sex in a more positive light when she refers to it as making love whereas Christian refers to it has f***ing. The author seems to continuously reinforce false stereotypes against women as it is clear that the sexual object or sexual subject is Anastasia. She is identified as a sexual conquest to be persuaded and lusted over. Her only weakness was showing emotion of love for the man of her dreams. Christian is identified as the dominator, sexual subjectivity, in charge of the sexual encounter and his strength is not showing his emotion. Human emotion is a powerful concept because when emotion takes over, you have no control over how you feel and the outcome that follows. When someone allows that emotion to take over, your consciousness becomes cloudy and you justify irrational feelings. It can be referred to as a slight lack of common sense. Anastasia was in a similar situation when her emotions clouded her better judgment. Although she knew she deserved better she refused to accept it because of how intimate she felt with Christian on both an emotional and physical level. Call it love, call it lust, but needless to say she was vulnerable, and he took advantage of her so called â€Å"weakness of emotion†. Based on all the details of the book, the fantasies, how strongly the characters are displayed; one would expect the author to be a man. Those of you with that false conception are WRONG! The author’s name was Erika Leonard James; a 50 year old wife and mother who was working as a television executive before her huge success. It was appalling to find out that the author was a woman because it made me question how a woman could write a book against the empowerment of women. Erika was a very shy individual; like Anastasia as she portrayed herself in documentaries and interviews that were conducted about her wild fantasies. She stated that 50 Shades of Grey was her midlife crisis†. (cite) She had been so absorbed with working for her family’s satisfaction and happiness that there was no one making her happy. Her writing skills were her way of coping with what she was lacking in her reality. She wanted to put her fantasies into life by creating Anastasia; a character that exemplified her own traits but was able to find happiness in a way that Erika was unable to. Unlike most people, she did not view submission as a punishment but rather a sexual reward that was able to satisfy her in a way that her regular routines failed to do. Some women like submission and it is usually the woman who are displayed as shy, innocent, quiet and soft spoken. It is a type of lifestyle, in no means did she intend to portray this as â€Å"I am against feminism. † It’s a fetish for some people and this book has allowed a lot of individuals to come out and openly talk about their own suppressed desires. The author was taking feminism to another level; she was giving women the freedom to express their sexual desires. Many men put women on a pedestal and continuously compare them to an ideal character that does not exist! Women want what men want; freedom of sexual liberation. Feminism is not just about freedom of rights and equality within the workplace and society; but goes far beyond that. Many people misinterpreted Erickas literature as mocking femininity; when in reality she was opening new doors. There were many critics of this book and she stated that the negative feedback was of no surprise to her. A lot of people mocked the book and labeled it as porn for women. The media used the hypodermic needle approach and injected particular meanings into consumers. Media displays anything sexually related to be only experienced by men and it is not right for women to talk about their sexual desires openly. It is viewed as not â€Å"womanly† to display her sexual desires out loud or even to think about them. A flawed assumption that patriarchal culture holds is that the ideal women should be homely and innocent, blushing and shying away at the mention of words related to sex. This ideology has been painted in many people’s mentality resulting in judgments to be held and the labeling of â€Å"promiscuousness to be placed. How is it accurate for men to have the freedom to explore their sexuality but women to remain humble? Growing up and watching many TV series, makes it difficult not to have this mind set, but human ignorance couldn’t be colder. We grew up being exposed to women as modest and righteous versus sexually active and deviant. All or at least most guys would pick the modest women in the blink of an eye. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see an ignorant view being placed in all our minds growing up, because this isn’t right. It’s appalling how media can inject such false notions into us and let it take control of our lives. Media makes it seem that some views such as female sexuality cannot be changed because of the concrete mindset people have instilled. A lot of pressure is put on the younger generation as it is really hard to maintain these expectations that society deems as appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Living in the 20th century and holding values from the 18th century, is not going to get us anywhere. It is really easy for media teach us to isolate people who step out of the norm and participate in abnormal behavior. Media has us twisting the real meaning of the book into something that it is not because of the expressive ideas that are being portrayed that is socially unacceptable. Through careful analysis, it can be noted that Erika was not taking feminism backwards but forward with her exposure to exotic behavior, many women have decided to open up.

The actual testing will identify those that are susceptible to contracting a disease, but is not to be used as a means of diagnostic measures. However, there is a large amount of concern about the potential misuse of genetic information being available to employers. When navigating to the official website of Self, one of today’s leading women’s magazines, I was not surprised to immediately stumble upon a photograph of two slender women, in skimpy shorts and sports bras, exercising on the beach. â€Å"Flat belly Secrets† was the headline under the image, along with the subtopics â€Å"Magic Moves that Work Your Whole Core,† â€Å"Superfoods for a Sexy Stomach,† and â€Å"4 Ab Mistakes Everyone Makes.† It is no secret that modern American culture gives great importance to body image, namely to having a â€Å"perfect† physique, although a vast majority of the population is far from attaining said physique. I struggled for years to â€Å"make peace† with my own body and obtain a positive body image, hence why I have chosen to research body image and the media, focusing more on the female aspect of it. With so much attention being given to people’s perceptions of their own physical beauty, numerous studies have been conducted on men and women of all ages. Every single study I read about in gathering information for this report showed that body image dissatisfaction, â€Å"the feeling that people may have that their actual physical appearance is not how they would ideally like it to be† (Kovar), is experienced by an astonishing number of men and women. That being said, it was also evident from the research that women are significantly more affected by body image dissatisfaction. One particular study of male and female undergraduates concluded that compared to men’s perceptions, â€Å"women's [body image] perceptions place [greater] pressure on them to lose weight† (Fallon and Rozin). I located an article on CNN. Com the article is â€Å"Why we should not legalize marijuana†. The author states that marijuana is the commonly abused illegal drug in the U. S. , and around the world. The author also states that marijuana makes it totally impossible for a person using it to function and live a normal daily life. The author believes everyone who uses this drug she have penalties against them. I disagree, because the author is not stating facts and the information she provided In the article does is not reliable because she is going off of her opinions.I know many people who smoke marijuana and many people who use other drugs. Marijuana would not do much harm, I know a lot of people who are successful college graduates who used marijuana all throughout college and in their careers. Although I have never smoked a day in my life. I have reliable sources who have and decided to question them. I questioned friends who smoke marijuana, and friends who used to smoke mar ijuana. In my Interviews with friends and a few family members the ones who smoked told me It relaxes them and helps them focus more and have a clear vision on the things.The ones who quit says marijuana helped them perform better in school and feel stress free and that the only reason they quit was because of employment purposes. There are other drugs out there such as crack cocaine that can cause bodily harm and damage and even death while using, or overdose. You can not over dose on marijuana, marijuana can not cause serious harm. Being that marijuana can not cause you any serious harm or causes anyone to lose their life. I think It should be legalized and people should not get In trouble for having It. It should be their choice since no serious side effects occur

Create a Magic Genie in a Bottle Effect Drop a chemical into a flask to produce a cloud of water vapor and oxygen, resembling a magic genie emerging from its bottle. This chemistry demonstration can be used to introduce the concepts of decomposition reactions, exothermic reactions, and catalysts. Magic Genie Safety Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles. The 30% hydrogen peroxide used in this demonstration is a strong oxidizing agent which should be handled with care. It is extremely corrosive and reactive. Sodium iodide should not be ingested. The chemical reaction evolves heat so it is important to use borosilicate glass and to take care that the mouth of the flask is directed away from people. Magic Genie Demonstration Materials 50 ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)4 g of sodium iodide, NaI [may substitute manganese(IV) oxide]1-liter borosilicate (Pyrex or Kimax) volumetric flaskFilter paper or tissue paper The peroxide solution is considerably more concentrated than ordinary household peroxide (3%), so youll either need to obtain it from a beauty supply store, chemical supply ​store or online. Sodium iodide or manganese oxide are best obtained from chemical suppliers. Magic Genie Procedure Wrap the sodium iodide or manganese oxide in a piece of filter paper or tissue paper. Staple the paper so none of the solid can spill out.Carefully pour 50 ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide solution into the volumetric flask.Set the flask a counter and cover it with a towel to protect your hands from the heat of the reaction. When you are ready, drop the packet of solid reactant into the flask. Be sure the flask is pointed away from yourself and students. The magic water vapor genie will appear!After the demonstration is complete, the liquid may be washed down the drain with excess water. Rinse the flask and dilute any spills with water before cleanup. Magic Genie Reaction Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water vapor and oxygen gas. The reaction is: 2H2O2 (aq) → 2H2O (g) O2 (g) heat Helpful Tips for the Magic Genie Experiment Use of Pyrex, Kimax, or another type of borosilicate glass minimizes the risk of breakage.Rather than dropping the packet of sodium iodide or manganese oxide, you can hang it inside the flask by a string taped to the outside of the flask or secured (loosely) with a stopper. Do not tightly seal the flask! A stopper with a hole or two is safest.  Use a large volume flask, even though youre only using a small volume of liquid. This is because brown liquid can splash up near the conclusion of the reaction. This liquid is free iodine released from the oxidizing effect of the strong peroxide solution.Make sure you dont seal or tightly stopper the flask, as pressure buildup from a premature reaction can shatter the flask violently.Excess sodium iodide may be thrown away in the trash receptacle.Are you artistic? They are used to indicate a place, time, cause, and manner, and they can be found in various parts of a sentence.
